I
am an iPhone Application developer. Can my application use “AltaMail”
to print documents from my application?
How does it work?
“AltaMail” for iPhone requires a
separate helper application for printing called “WePrint” to be running
on your
laptop or desktop computer. The WePrint software is free and can be
downloaded here.
“AltaMail” for iPhone sends
documents & email to the WePrint server software to print to local
or networked
printers. The help page has
more information.

My iPhone says “Error
connecting to the server”. It can’t find the WePrint server
- On rare occasions connection problems
occur and are usually caused by your Firewall. Check the Windows or Macintosh
help page to make sure your firewall isn’t blocking connections. Try
turning off your firewall temporarily to test it.
- Check that you have downloaded and
installed the WePrint helper application.
- Check that the WePrint helper application
is running and the status field shows “Running”
- Check that your iPhone WiFi network is
active in the iPhone settings.
- Make sure the “Server address” and
“Server port” displayed in your WePrint window are the same is
displayed in the Add print server screen of your iPhone.
- Press the “More...” button in the WePrint
window to see any additional server address that your computer may use
and type these into your iPhone.
- If you are using Windows and you haven't
installed iTunes, you may need to install Bonjour
to make network setup easier. It is not required, but does allow the
iPhone to find the server automatically in most instances.
- Check that you the iPhone and the WePrint
server are in the same network. On the iPhone in the Add Server screen,
you will see the iPhone address in the bottom of the screen. The last
number can be different, but if the first 3 groups numbers of the IP
address and the WePrint server aren’t the same, you are in a different
network. Then see below for network setup.

How do I print when using a 3G network, or outside my
own WiFi network?
Generally, when you are in your local
network “AltaMail” will automatically find your WePrint server
in your network and allow you to print straight away.
Printing directly from a 3G/EDGE network
to your home/office network requires your local WiFi network to allow
access. Check here for some assistance.

What is “Server address” and “Server port” in the
Add print server screen?
The server address and port tell your iPhone
where your WePrint server is so it can communicate with it. The main
window of the WePrint server (on your desktop or laptop computer) will
display these values so you can copy them to your iPhone.
You can change the port number by clicking
on WePrint -> Settings -> Advanced -> Use custom server
port number. Try changing the port to 8081 or 8082

How do I setup my email in AltaMail?

My email account shows an error when I try to read my
emails.
Check that your email account User Name,
Password and Server Name match those supplied for your email account.
Ignore any outgoing or SMTP settings as those aren’t required.
Check if your email account uses POP or IMAP
and change the setting accordingly using the “Advanced” slider at the
bottom of the edit account screen to show the switch.
If you still have problems use the email
button on the error window to email your error to our support
department. The iPhone can't be contacted when I try to mount it as a
disk

How do I move files & documents to and from my
computer to my
iPhone?
In
the WePrint application settings, you can specify a directory on your
computer to share with the iPhone “AltaMail” application. The
contents of this directory will be displayed in a list on your iPhone
when you press the + button in the bottom of the Saved Files
screen, then tap "Import". Select one or more files from this list and press “Save” to
download the files to your iPhone. Once they are there you can then
select, view & print them.

What printers can I print to?
You can print to any printer that your
computer can print to. Printers can be connected to your computer via
USB cable, network, WiFi or other means.

My print job appears in Weprint but goes no further?
When I print I get a blank page or my printer shows
an error, what do I do?
It appears as if your printer doesn't
support the standard background printing without a print dialog. Go to
WePrint Settings -> Advanced and try changing your WePrint setting
to "Compatibility Printing mode"

Can I print SMS/Text messages?
Due to iPhone O/S restrictions, applications
can't access SMS messages, only Apple can.

Can I
print from Apple Mail instead?
What
about printing from the Apple Calendar?
Our software can't provide a printing
service to other applications due to the iPhone operating system
restrictions. Other applications can be modified to provide printing
functionality using the WePrint software, but it is up to the
manufacturer to modify their own software. We would be happy to talk
with any application developer who wants to include printing for their
software.

Can
I
print
direct
to
a
WiFi
printer
without
WePrint?
Printers require print drivers to print and
if none are available, then you can’t print directly from the iPhone.
However some WiFi printers and computers support CUPS/IPP (direct connection) and you won’t
need to install the extra software to print using this app, but because of the lack of printer drivers this method is limited
both in terms of document types & printers supported. This means you can print without using extra software if your printer supports it and if you only
want to print basic document types - but installing WePrint will allow you to print ALL document
types to ALL the printers that you can print with your computer.
Using WePrint will give you the most functionality and compatibility, it runs in the background so you don’t
have to go to your computer to print something you see on your iPhone. Also using WePrint enables you to print
remotely from anywhere using 3G/Edge without having to be on your home WiFi network. You can print to most office
printers even if your iPhone is not allowed to connect to your office network. Your computer needs to be on and WePrint
needs to be running to use the WePrint printing features.

How
can
I
restrict
printing
access
on
WePrint?
The WePrint application has a setting to
require a password to print or share files. Once this is set, iPhone
users will need to enter the password before they can print or view
files. For additional security, the WePrint server can specify that the
password is not saved on the iPhone. This will mean that the user will
need to enter the password each time they start the “AltaMail”
application and access the WePrint server.

Some
other
application
documents
types
don't
print
as
they
should
The WePrint application uses external
applications to print some document types eg. Word or Excel. A standard
system call is used to ask these applications to print documents, but
sometimes these applications have problems.
You can test how your system handles
printing these file types by doing the following:
Windows: right click on a document in the explorer, and select “Print”
from the menu
Mac: select the document in the finder, and select “Print” from the
File menu
Check that the document’s application
doesn’t have a document wizard dialog at startup. Some Word versions
need an empty document open or it will present a print dialog.

I
am an iPhone Application developer or customer. Can my application use
“AltaMail” to print documents?
We can provide an interface to print
documents from other applications, but the distributor needs to include
it. Please contact us or get your
application distributor to contact us for more information.
